So right about the time the pandemic started, I developed some severe lower abdominal pain. I had some inflamation in the left groin area and figured I had another groin hernia - I’d had one on the right side about 12 years ago with similar symptoms so I figured that’s what this was.
I talked to my regular doctor about it and his advice was to take it easy, don’t do any strenuous stuff, and try to ride it out till things calm down and I can get a consult to see a surgeon. Well the last 2 days I’ve been in agony and my better half finally convinced me to go to the ER.
Well they ran some tests and SURPRISE! Appendicitis!!! I may be going under the knife tonight, if my COVID test come back negative.
As an aside, holy shit, the rapid COVID test isn’t fun! They shove a plastic swab up your nose for 20 seconds, on each side. It feels like a needle about to rip through your sinuses and into your eyeballs.
Update: Apparently its pretty bad, they want this appendix out tonight, so Im going in for surgery in about an hour.

Ouch. Hopefully the test is clear and you can get this done ASAP, being in constant pain sucks.

I’m having an endoscopy on the 26th and will have a Covid test early next week. Yay. Feel better! Best wishes.

Dang! On the bright side, I think appendicitis is pretty well understood these days . I’ll be thinking about you. Please keep us posted.

Oof. I hope you feel better soon. I’m glad to hear that it was caught before anything worse happened - I once had a hospital roommate who was back in after being improperly discharged; he had appendicitis, was sent home, then it burst. I won't be able to experience such trauma - whilst they were taking out half of my colon last year they took the appendix at the same time...

Damn man, that sucks! I guess, if you’re going to get sick, Appendicitis is one of the better things to happen considering you’ll make a full recovery...
GET WELL SOON!!!

Glad you didn’t sleep, e rrr, I mean Snuze on it. Should be quite a relief once it’s over and done with and minimally invasive as far as surgeries go. Hope you’re feeling better soon.
I do wonder though, what’s their plan if you were to comeback covid- positive?

And this is Georgia’s version of “almost rust free” too. That Jeep J10 in the background is straddling the line of a rustbucket in this line of thought.

Good luck my friend. It's been a while since I had mine out, before all the craziness of going in through the belly button.

Oh that sucks, I have had the hernia surgery but not an appendix. I actually looked it up recently when I got a pain below by navel and in quarantine mode I assumed it was something like that. I had the hernia done a few years ago and they did both sides just because. Well I hope it goes smoothly, probably better than hernia post surgery, my hernia recovery was a bitch, you really need your abdominal muscles to do anything!

Oh man, a burst appendix would have been worse than covid. Thank goodness for wives. Get better, Man.

Thanks!
Hernia recovery was a bitch. I mean id rather not require any surgery, but given the choice Ill take apendectomy over hernia repair . Hell, I’d take almost anything over hernia surgery.

Thanks!
No idea on a plan B. Maybe do the surgery in space suits?
![]() 05/16/2020 at 16:49 |

yeah, when I was a kid an appendectomy usually left you with a 4-6" scar on your side.
now they can just poke a couple of holes in you.

Thanks.
And thank god that car is in Atlanta. I could imagine post surgery, in an anesthesia induced haze, trying to buy it! Though I might have to be really, really high to bite at $2500.

Thank you.
Glad you already got yours out, I guess? I mean if you’re gonna do surgery might as well get it all done.
Actually Im a little concerned because the doctors are a bit confused that its taken me something like 10 weeks for this to get bad enough for me to come to the ER. Usually with appendicitis its a couple days, tops. So the surgeon already told me after he gets the appendix out he wants to have a look and see if there's anything wrong with my bowels. If so they may need to take a little extra out.

Thanks, I hope so too. The surgeon came in to talk to me and wants to schedule it for later this evening, so I guess that means I'm in the clear.

Thanks. They told me it would be done laparoscopically with 3 small incisions. Seems less invasive than the belly button.

And that is an apt description. And they do it TWICE! Once on each nostril! F uck COVID and its awful test!!!

I somehow had roughly the same idea. That is a very solid base for a project and man that color is fantastic. Let's hope no other tempting Swedes pop up until after the surgery.

I guess you could say it was a package deal. I’ve had diverticulosis problems with my left colon, and some damage still exists in there, but they found a tumor in my right colon, and when they yanked that out the appendix was just part of the package. No more tumor, no more cancer, but I still have the damaged left colon. I have changed my diet and eating habits and haven’t had a diverticulitis attack in years, so I should be good as long I eat properly and stay healthy. This lockdown thing hasn’t been the best for me in that regard, but I’m doing what I can.
That does sound a little odd that it took so long for the appendicitis to become acute, and I hope that everything else is OK. But yeah, while they have you opened up they might as well take a look around, just in case. My surgery was done with robots and there was very little scarring. If they do that with you I don’t know how much they’ll be able to see, but I’m sure they have their ways. What surprised me after my surgery was that I was on solid food the next day and discharged the day after that , and pain killers were strictly OTC - acetaminophen and ibuprofen, no prescriptions, no opiates. With any luck your recovery will be as simple and painless.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I remember you talking a bit about some of your medical issues but didn’t remember any of the details. It sounds like they did a pretty good job of patching you up, all things considered, and Im glad you continue to be healthy.
The doctor mentioned some other “ticulitus” but it wasnt d iverticulitis, but they are concerned that I could have that. Probably a result of the appendicitis going untreated for so long. I guess Ill get all the details post surgery, which is set to start in about 40 minutes.

INOVA is a quality system. I used to have a job where I would look into that sort of thing, and chose to have both our kids at INOVA Fairfax. Saw the update, glad you're getting it taken care of

Well, shit, too bad you had to go through the pain, but it seems that’s how people with appendicitis find out about it. I hope everything works out well for you.
And if not, does tha t mean I get to keep the brick?
Kidding! :D

Yikes! Well, at least you listened and went in right away. I’m sure i t’ll go well, and I wish you a speedy recovery!
I’ve been there. I had to have my appendix out 20 years ago. I didn’t have any localized pain; it felt like food poisoning. I knew I needed to go to the ER when throwing up didn’t give me any relief. Went in around 8 pm, went into surgery at 7 am the next morning.

You’ll be through it by the time you read this, but good luck. Mine actually ruptured in 89 when I was in JR High. My parents didn’t believe me that I was in pain and after a few days I begged them to take me to the hospital. When I was there suddenly the pain went away and the Dr immediately rushed me in for surgery because he recognized what happened. I was in for a week while they cleaned me up of all the nastiness it released. Sounds like yours is being caught before that.
The only good thing is when you have abdominal pain and people say it might be that you’ll be able to go “nope!”. Best wishes man, I hear it’s a lot easier now, I have a huge scar across my waistline where mine came out, I hear it barely leaves a mark now.
